Sutton upon Tern to Colehurst Walk with Kids – Peaceful Shropshire Circular Trail

What do you love about where you live?

It’s all about the walks

When we moved to our house, there were many things we loved about it, but one of the things we were most excited about was being back in the countryside and all the things we could do together as a family in the fresh air and the open space.

The one thing I was most looking forward to, was being able to go for a quiet walk right from my front door. It’s free, it’s great for the mind and the body, and it’s something we could do as a family! We started with small walks when the boys were toddlers and we’ve been able to easily add mileage as they’ve grown – what more could I want?

Our favourite local walks

This blog is still quite new, so I’ve not shared all of our favourite local walks yet (and by local, I mean ones we can do straight from our house), but I’ll list the ones I have blogged about at the end of this post.

The Secret Walk

I first did this walk around 3 years ago. It was one I’d been meaning to do for a while, but I had felt it was still on the long side for our lads before this point. I’d also been worried about walking it as the pathway sign said ‘restricted byway’ – I had translated this to being ‘off limits’, not least because the farmer often left his big farm machinery across it and I thought it was his way of trying to keep walkers away 😂 Eventually I came across the farmer and asked, after a chuckle he informed me it just meant that some of it was considered a bridleway, but for some unknown reason it ceases to be a bridleway halfway down! Since then we’ve walked it many more times, and it’s a firm favourite of ours. We nicknamed it ‘the Secret walk’ due to it being hidden behind the farm machinery!

Sutton upon Tern/Colehurst Circular Walking route

Recently we re-walked this route and I remembered to take some photos! It is a brilliant circular that totals a perfect 4 miles. You can join it at any point, and walk it in either direction. The majority of the walk is flat, although much of the terrain is field or track, and on occasions there have been livestock or crops in fields. Beware that there are sometimes electric fences in use (though usually passable) and some of the walk is on a country lane, so be aware of traffic.

The first time we walked this, I stopped halfway round for a picnic, as my youngest was only 4 or 5, and it broke the walk up nicely and gave him that extra bit of energy to finish the walk!

There are far reaching views for much of the walk, and it’s usually a very quiet and peaceful route – we’ve yet to meet anyone in those fields.

Family Feedback: Colehurst Circular

This is a firm family favourite. The easy terrain makes it a fairly quick walk and the ability to tag on an extra mile or so using other local footpaths is a real winner for when we have extra energy to burn off! Both the boys mentioned they liked everything ‘except the electric fence’ – there have been a couple of times that access between fields has been by having to squeeze between electric fences with no safe way to move it to pass. Unfortunately it’s a gamble as you’re already into the thick of the walk by the time you reach these places. The access at point (4) on the map can also often be boggy and overgrown (and this is where the farm machinery is stored) – wear good sturdy and waterproof footwear and bring a stick! Despite this, the boys still regularly choose to walk this way!
