Winter Family Walk in Shropshire – A Scenic Local Snowy Trail

The last couple of weekends have been the first we haven’t walked since we started this blog back in June! The first weekend was due to sporting commitments for our boys, and this weekend, well, Storm Bert probably hampered everyone’s walking plans!

However, we have been walking when we can during the week, although it is just our local dog walking routes, and certainly nothing to write home about, let alone to write a blog post about. But last week, of course, many of us had snow for a couple of days, so I thought I’d share some of the photos I took on one snowy walk!

The Best of the Snow

I didn’t think we would get the snow. Snow forecasts are usually so off where we live, so imagine my surprise when the children came bounding into our room that morning shouting excitedly about the snow! I was even more gobsmacked when it snowed again the next day!!

View from our bedroom window on the first morning was a surprise! I have no faith in snow forecasts so this was a great surprise (I love snow!) Perhaps less fun for the sheep!
The Elephant Grass weighed down by the snow fall.
I walk this beautiful lane almost every day. It’s pretty, but even prettier with this snow. I loved the mix of autumn golds and greens with the wintry white snow!
A local bridleway fairly well protected from the snow due to the thick line of trees either side.
More beautiful snow covered trees. Freshly fallen snow is the best!
Walking down our lane. The snow had begun to settle on the road by the time we walked back!
A wintry scene.
Another scenic wintry lane. I was surprised by how much snow was coming through the tree canopy’s.

I really hope we get to do some more snowy/wintry walks together this year!

It’s Snow Unfair!

Sadly (for the children) there wasn’t enough snow for a snow day, and school remained open both days. As a HUGE lover of snow, I always encourage the boys to get out there and enjoy it before it goes, as it’s always gone too soon. That meant as soon as they’d had their breakfast they were out in the garden and making the most of it before they had to get ready for school. (We’re always up quite early for work which is perfect for the boys to get a good 45-60 minutes of snow play time before they have to come in and get ready!)

Here are some of the fun snowy activities we managed to squeeze into that time, despite there only being an inch or two of snow…

The youngest built a snowman! It wasn’t the “good” sticky snow, but he did it!
We had snowball fights! Has it even snowed if you don’t have a snowball fight?!
Snow Angels!

It wasn’t thick enough to get the sledge out, but boy did they make sure that they made the most of the snow. And I’m glad they did, because it never lasts in England!

Stay warm! Don’t forget to dress children properly for the snow: waterproof layers, hats, gloves, good boots and warm clothes. Make sure everyone warms up when they’re back inside and gets dry clothes on. We had the fire on and I warmed the boys uniforms, but if they weren’t going to school, we’d have probably sat by the fire with hot chocolates and blankets or had a warm bath. Cosy wintry fun!

Did you make the most of the snow?

  1. Last time we had snow down here the boys pummeled me mercilessly with snowballs 😁. Love those photos of the lanes, just wish we’d have had some on Dartmoor for the weekend. it was on Dartmoor one day and gone the next, so very few got out to see it
