Free or Low-Cost Outdoor Ideas for Children #8: Playgrounds and Parks

All the ideas I’ve shared so far and it was only when I was sat in the park watching my boys play recently that I realised what an obvious suggestion this was, and couldn’t believe it wasn’t in my list of Free or Cheap Outdoor Activity Ideas for Children already!

As Mums (Dads, carers, grandparents etc!), we’ve all been there: children bouncing off the walls, full of energy, and you just need somewhere to let them run free. Sometimes a garden just isn’t enough – so for me, the local playground has always been the obvious answer. But as time’s gone on, as I’ve spent hundreds of hours watching my children play, I’ve realised playgrounds aren’t just about burning off energy – they’re little goldmines of learning, growth, and connection. Let me tell you why…

A Safe Space to Explore

Playgrounds give children that perfect mix of freedom and safety. It’s a place where they can climb, swing, and slide without you worrying too much (though let’s be honest, we’re still watching like hawks). They get to push boundaries and test what they’re capable of – like the first time they brave the big slide or make it across the monkey bars. That sense of accomplishment? Priceless.

Learning Through Play

Ever notice how children naturally start to problem-solve on the climbing frames? “How do I get to the top?” “Which step do I take next?” “How do I get down again?”. They’re learning without even realising it. Playgrounds help with spatial awareness, coordination, strength and even patience – especially when there’s a queue for the swings.

A unique climbing frame that made the boys think hard about the best routes to the top – culminating in races!

Making Friends

If your child is anything like mine, they’ll leave the playground with at least one new ‘best friend’. It’s such a lovely space for them to practise social skills – sharing, taking turns, or teaming up to build an imaginary world. Socialising with lots of different children and making new friendship groups is just as important as spending time with those they’re already close with.

Physical Exercise Without the Fuss

Playgrounds make exercise fun. Children don’t even realise they’re working on their strength, balance, and endurance. A teacher once told me that they actively encouraged their (school) children to use the monkey bars, as the strength their hands gained helped improve handwriting! Who knew?! Climbing, running, and swinging all keep them active – and it’s so much better than battling over screen time at home!

That’s practically a pull up! 😱

A Dose of Fresh Air

Whether it’s a sunny afternoon or you’re wrapped up on a crisp autumn morning, there’s something refreshing about being outdoors. You don’t always have to commit to a 6 mile hike to get your outdoor fix! Fresh air and outdoor play are proven to boost children’s physical and mental health. Studies show that spending time outdoors improves concentration, reduces stress, and enhances creativity. On top of that, exposure to natural light helps regulate sleep cycles, which is essential for growing children. Why wouldn’t you encourage playground time?!

Come rain or shine, sun or frost, get out there and have some fun!

Boosting Confidence

When my boys mastered the monkey bars after trying time and time again, claiming at each attempt “I can’t do it,” the grin on their faces said it all. Playgrounds are great for building resilience and confidence. Every little “win” makes them believe in themselves just that bit more.

The youngest finally cracks the monkey bars! Success!

The Practical Perks

And let’s not overlook the practical side of playgrounds – they’re free, easy to find, and often come with a bench for us mums to perch on while we enjoy some peace and quiet (yes, we deserve it!). (Recently I’ve also noticed an increase in parks that have adult exercise equipment on, so it’s even a great opportunity for us to get some exercise in too whilst still keeping a close eye on our children!) Plus, a good hour at the playground usually means a quieter bedtime – and that’s a win for everyone, isn’t it?

So next time you’re debating whether to pop to the park or stay home, remember this: playgrounds aren’t just fun. They’re little outdoor classrooms, social hubs, and confidence boosters all rolled into one. And honestly? They’re just as good for us mums as they are for the children!

What’s your favourite part of taking the children to the playground?
