What Is a Pump Track? A Family-Friendly Guide to BMX & Bike Skills Parks

What on Earth is a Pump Track (and Why Should You Care)?

If you’ve ever stumbled across a looping track filled with swoopy corners and rollers that make your children whoop with joy, you’ve probably found yourself at a pump track. Or maybe a BMX park. Or both!

But what actually is a pump track? Why are they suddenly popping up in parks and playgrounds across the UK? And most importantly – should you and your family give one a go?

What is a Pump Track or BMX Park?

A pump track is a continuous loop of berms (banked turns), rollers (humps), and features designed to be ridden without pedalling. Riders “pump” their bikes up and down over the terrain to generate momentum. Think of it like a skatepark for bikes – but smoother and more flowy.

A BMX park is typically larger and includes more varied terrain – jumps, ramps, and technical sections – designed for tricks and racing. While BMX parks tend to attract more advanced riders, many still include beginner zones suitable for all levels.

Who Are They For?

Everyone!
Seriously – from toddlers on balance bikes to mountain bikers in training, to grown-ups rediscovering their love of two wheels 😉.

  • Young children: Balance bikes and small wheeled bikes handle pump tracks brilliantly.
  • Teenagers: A great, safe space to test out new tricks.
  • Adults: Whether you ride MTB or BMX or just want to improve your balance, pump tracks are a full-body workout in disguise.
  • Families: The looped design means no one can get too far away – perfect for group rides.
  • Not just for bikes – a smooth tarmac track is also perfect for BMX, scooters, skateboards, roller skates or blades!

Where Can You Find Them?

They’re becoming more and more common, especially in larger towns and cities. Look for:

  • Local council recreation areas
  • Urban green spaces
  • Playgrounds and skateparks
  • Mountain bike centres

Use apps like Komoot, Trailforks, or even Google Maps – just search for “pump track near me” or “BMX park” and you’ll often find hidden gems.

Pump tracks help to build confidence.

What Are the Benefits of Riding a Pump Track?

  • Builds confidence: Pump tracks are predictable, repetitive, and safe – a great way to practice without fear.
  • Improves mountain bike skills: Mastering cornering, body position, and balance here translates directly to the trails.
  • Strength and cardio: Pumping uses your whole body. You’ll be knackered in the best way.
  • Fun for all ages: Everyone can ride together, from toddlers to teens to adults.
  • Free or low-cost: Most community pump tracks are free to use. And we love this!

What Do You Need?

  • A bike (MTB, BMX, balance bike – they all work)
  • A helmet (a must!)
  • Gloves and pads (especially for beginners or speedy riders)
  • Closed-toe shoes and non flowy clothing
  • A water bottle – you’ll be working harder than you think! (Ask me how I know 😅)

Are Pump Tracks Family Friendly?

100%! They’re self-contained, safe, and fun for all levels. The layout keeps everyone nearby, so it’s easy to keep an eye on little ones while older children zoom around. Many are in parks with benches, grassy spots, and even playgrounds nearby.

Bring snacks, bikes, and a picnic – and make a day of it.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for an exciting way to build biking skills, burn off some energy, and have a blast outdoors, pump tracks and BMX parks are your new best friend. They’re fairly accessible, affordable, and so much fun!
