10 Free & Cheap Outdoor Activities for Kids This October Half Term UK

🍂 Free & Cheap Outdoor Adventures for Kids This October Half Term

Half term’s here again! If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to get the children outdoors (because the walls can only take so much bouncing off 🤪), but without emptying your wallet. October’s weather is usually… well, October-ish — but that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Rain, wind, mud? All part of the adventure!

Here are some free or cheap ideas for family fun this October half term that will get everyone outside, no matter the weather.

1. Conker Hunts & Autumn Foraging

October is conker season. Challenge the children to collect the biggest, shiniest conkers they can find, or string them up for the classic playground game (anyone else remember their favourite “hardening” techniques?). You can also forage blackberries or sloes if they’re still around – perfect for a crumble or just snacking on the way home.

2. Muddy Walks with a Twist

Let’s be honest: walks in October can be very soggy. So embrace it! Pull on wellies and waterproofs, and make “mud the mission.” Who can find the squelchiest puddle? Or set a scavenger hunt list (different coloured leaves, acorns, feathers). Children forget they’re walking miles if they’ve got a challenge.

3. Woodland Playgrounds (and Free Forestry England Trails)

Lots of Forestry England sites have free adventure trails and play areas — perfect for climbing, sliding, and burning off energy without spending a penny. Even if the trails are muddy, the trees give a bit of cover from the rain. You don’t even have to travel to your nearest Forestry England site – my children love nothing more sometimes than an hour or so down their local park!

4. Visit Local Curiosities

Every area has its quirks – free, unusual, and guaranteed to get the children curious. Check your local area for quirky ruins, follies, or abandoned places that make a walk feel like an adventure!

This mysterious building always sparks our imaginations when we visit Bishops Wood – and makes for a great Hallowe’en walk!

5. Leaf Art and Nature Crafts

Take a bag and collect colourful leaves, twigs, and pinecones. Once home (with the heating on and hot chocolate in hand), the children can make leaf rubbings, collages, or even spooky autumn wreaths. Cost = zero. Entertainment = priceless.

6. Reservoir or Canal Walks

Reservoirs and canals are often flat, easy for little legs, and free to access. Many have paths wide enough for scooters or bikes, so you can mix walking with riding. Bonus points if you spot ducks, herons, or the odd canal boat.

A mere trickle of water enters the reservoir – clearly it’s been much wider in the past!

7. Local Pumpkin Patches (Budget Version)

Some pumpkin patches now charge an entry fee (and not a small one!). Look out for free-entry ones where you just pay for what you pick. Or skip the commercial farms altogether and buy a cheap supermarket pumpkin — then head outdoors to carve it on a picnic table in your local park. Much less mess at home! 🎃

8. Stargazing Nights

October evenings come early, which is actually a win — you don’t have to keep children up past bedtime to see the stars. Grab blankets, hot water bottles, and a flask of something hot and tasty, then head to a dark local spot – or even just your back garden. Free, magical, and it doubles as science homework if anyone asks 😉. Don’t forget – this October (2025) there are two comets you should be able to spot with the naked eye or even some binoculars!

9. Free Museums with Outdoor Space

OK, not strictly outdoors the whole time, but lots of free museums (especially local heritage sites) have outdoor play areas or gardens. Great for mixing learning with a run-around when the weather breaks. Our favourite is Cosford museum – yes it’s mostly indoors but there are still plenty of exhibits outside too, and lots of outdoor space for playing and picnic-ing!

10. Campervan Adventures (or Pretend Ones!)

If you’ve got a van like Vangelina, half term is the perfect time to bundle in for a day trip — even if the weather’s grim, you can warm up with a hot chocolate on the stove afterwards. We love a simple park visit – play outside they’re tired, then bundle into the van for a sandwich and hot drink! No van? No problem. Pack a flask, some food and a blanket and have a “van-style picnic” in the boot of the car (we’ve done this so many times before!). Children love the novelty, and you can be sure they will mention your “boot picnics” for years to come!

🌧 Final Thoughts

October half term in the UK is never going to be Caribbean weather. But with the right gear (waterproofs, wellies, flasks), there are loads of free and cheap outdoor adventures to be had. From conker hunting to muddy scavenger walks, the trick is to sell it to the children as an adventure (because let’s be honest, if you wait for perfect weather, you’ll never leave the house).

So pack spare socks, embrace the rain, and make memories without spending a fortune!

    1. Thank you Hazel! We passed one field the other day that was HUGE and it was neatly laid out with lines of pumpkins in different colours – it looked brilliant but I was driving and couldn’t take a photo. Do you do the whole pumpkin thing where you live?

      1. No. We don’t have pumpkin thing as huge as you have there. We only have a small pumpkin or squash for eating.

My pleasure, EJ. Have a beautiful weekend ahead!

    1. Haha you can’t beat a good playground!! In the past I’ve used the playground buddy app to find new playgrounds in areas we’ve visited. I was even shocked how good it was helping find local playgrounds I had no idea about 🤩 My pair still enjoy going though and have their firm favourites too 😁
