Family Walk up The Wrekin, Shropshire – A Return to Our Favourite Hill

2 boys looking out across the wrekin towards hills

Twice in as many weeks!

We had a lovely time visiting The Wrekin (less than 2 weeks ago!), so much so that we convinced our neighbours to join us for another walk up there. It was a walk they’d also wanted to do, so it was great to take along another active family to enjoy the views and the walk.

If you haven’t read it already, you can read about our first visit here. There’s also some helpful info on that post like where to park, parking costs, refreshments and some fun facts about The Wrekin.

The first half of today’s walk was very much identical to our first walk up to the summit – though the weather wasn’t quite as bright. Sadly it also meant that the view was not quite so clear either, but we’d headed up early enough to avoid the cloud that was due to come across mid morning, and the views were still pretty incredible!  I was happy to get a better photo of the Trig point this time as it was a bit quieter.

I finally got a trig point photo!
We reached the top again! Yay!

We all took 5 minutes to enjoy a quick drink and a snack by the same rocks, and headed back down the incredibly steep slope on the other side of the main pathway.

Fuel stop in the rocks again.

Another way around The Wrekin

At the bottom of the steep slope, we decided to walk the opposite way around to what we’d done last time. So, instead of heading along the footpath to the right, we headed left instead, and followed the alternative path through the trees and around the bottom of the Wrekin.

This route wasn’t as wide as how I remembered the other route, so we mostly walked single file, 2 abreast at most. It was also damper underfoot, with several squelchy sections. It had really wintry woodland vibes, with little trickles of water wandering across the paths at times, and it was probably a bit more unstable too, with some small rocks jutting out – but all this aside, it was just as beautiful as taking the other path. The entire route back was under the tree canopys, and that’s one of the things I like about the Wrekin, it’s two walks in one: A nice open, scenic hill climb, followed by a wonderful woodland wander!

Narrow pathways lead us around a different way at the bottom of the Wrekin.

About halfway around this woodland walk, the pathway opened up wider and we could all chat more easily again. Eventually it lead back to the corner, just before the short climb to the Halfway House. If getting back for a coffee, snack or ice cream is important to you, I’d highly recommend taking this route over the other, which leads you straight back to the carpark. However, both are beautiful, so actually I would just encourage you to come back to do both! 😉 We didn’t head back to the Halfway House as we had another walk planned after this, so we continued onward and back down the first hill to the car park.

The pathways soon widened up again through a picturesque wooded area – some fallen trees made for a bit of fun for the boys!

At the bottom we met a young lady who we were sure we’d seen several times on the walk – turns out we had! She was training for an ultra marathon and was about to go up again for her SEVENTH run of the morning! Wow!

Family Feedback: The Wrekin Walk

You know it’s a good walk when we’ve gone back again so soon after the first! We were delighted to have made it to the top much quicker than the last time, and the boys took great delight in being ‘Tour Guides’ for our neighbours! I don’t doubt that we will be back again, but we have plans to walk some of the other sections of the Wrekin hills before we attemp this path again, and hopefully by then we will have a vehicle to bring our bikes too, because when we left, the boys spotted an area with some children on bikes! I will of course let you know here!

TOTAL MILES: 4.20 | TOTAL TIME: 2h33 (1h57 Moving Time)

“To go around The Wrekin”. Again. But different!

  1. Same route we took when we did the Wrekin. Fab little mini mountain. If you think your two boys could manage a longer climb and walk then I’d recommend Caer Caradoc near Church Stretton. The Lawley is also great although parking near it is a bit limited.

    1. It’s a brilliant mini mountain isn’t it! My boys have absolutely loved both walks and even asked to go back again already! Oh that’s a great suggestion, thank you, I’ll add it to our list. We’re off to do Stiperstones today!
