Our 4th Month of Family Walks and Blogging – October 2024 Recap

Month 4 Recap

Here’s another recap, this time from our October adventures – month 4 of making hiking a part of our family routine!

We have all settled nicely into our new routine since the boys returned to school in September, and we have been continuing to do at least one walk each weekend. Weekends often see my husband working Saturdays, and my eldest playing football matches on the Sundays, but we are continuing to make an effort, which is the most important thing – making walking part of our normal routine was what we were aiming to achieve!

To avoid too much travelling, we have spent this month mostly walking the local routes from our doorstep, although we did re-visit Fenn’s moss and do our biggest walk to date! The changing season has also made us re-think what we need or have to wear on our walks, and I have put some helpful tips together for other parents looking to keep walking through the colder months. We are determined to keep this up whatever the British winter throws at us! Do you have any interesting or helpful tips on hiking with children over winter?

Conclusion

I’m happy to see we still hit the same mileage as last month and that our walks are still going, and with mostly enthusiasm too! During the half term break we did a “Mile a Day” challenge with the children finding something interesting to photograph on each walk, and, as the half term holidays approached, I also come up with some more Free or cheap outdoor activity ideas to inspire other families to get outdoors more – ideal for those that are looking to do more than just walking!

I am super excited to continue our new walking journey through the next few month’s, and I can’t wait for some frosty or even snowy walks! I hope you will join us along the way – please do subscribe to read about our family friendly walks or our other outdoor activity ideas for children.

Thanks as ever for joining us on our adventures through our posts! 🙂

  1. Can be tricky in winter, especially if you are walking fields which tend to get muddy. i always found that a pair of simple wellies for the kids can work well. Or a cheap pair of waterproof overtrousers can keep the worst of the wet off them, especially when sitting down

    1. We have some overtrousers so I may suggest they become a necessary article for the next couple of months! I keep considering wellies, but I remember as a child they were uncomfortable for walking in – that said, I see so many children walking in them, so maybe it was just me :p I’ll get them to try on a shorter walk with some good socks and see how they get on! My youngest will probably love it as he adores splashing in puddles!!
