What Should Children Wear for Hiking? Year-Round Clothing Tips for Family Walks

You’re ready to head out on an adventure – snacks are packed, route is planned, and spirits are high. But then the question hits: what exactly should the children wear?!

Whether it’s a five-minute woodland wander or a proper hill climb, dressing children right for hiking can be the difference between a joyful day and a soggy, whingy disaster. This guide covers the basics every child needs to wear, plus the specialist clothing to consider for summer heat and winter cold.

The Basics: What Every Child Needs for a Walk

Regardless of the season, these year-round essentials will keep your little explorers comfortable on the trail.

1. Sturdy Footwear

  • Proper trainers or hiking shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof boots or wellies for muddy trails
  • Avoid anything with slippery soles or open toes

💡 Tip: If your kids are new to hiking, try short walks first to break in new boots.

2. Base Layers That Breathe

  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirts
  • Avoid heavy jumpers – several thinner layers are better

3. Trousers Made for Movement

  • Leggings, joggers or hiking trousers
  • Avoid jeans (they get heavy and cold when wet)
  • Waterproof overtrousers are great for wet grass, puddles and sudden downpours

4. Light, Packable Outer Layers

  • A light fleece or hoodie
  • A waterproof jacket that can be stuffed in a rucksack when not in use (we love Mac in a Sac!)

5. Sun Hat or Woolly Hat

Keep their heads protected – from sun, wind, or cold. Even in mild weather, children can get chilly quicker than you think.

☀️ What Should Kids Wear for Hiking in Summer?

Hot weather brings its own challenges – sunburn, overheating, and bugs, to name a few.

1. Go Light, But Cover Up

  • Long-sleeved breathable tops protect from sun and midges
  • Lightweight, quick-dry trousers or shorts (trousers that unzip into shorts are amazing when the weather just can’t make up it’s mind!)
  • A cap or wide-brimmed hat
  • Sunglasses if tolerated (plus you’ll get great adventure photos!)

2. Don’t Forget:

  • High-factor suncream (apply before setting off and bring extra)
  • Insect repellent for wooded or boggy areas
  • A buff or neck tube to soak in water and cool down

💡 Pro tip: Always carry more water than you think you’ll need.

Sun hats and sunglasses are a must on a sunny day. Don’t forget to consider your einvironment – we all had long trousers on here as we were walking through woodland and didn’t want to encounter any ticks!

❄️ What Should Kids Wear for Hiking in Winter?

Layering is absolutely key – it keeps warmth in, lets moisture out, and gives you options as you go.

1. Layer Up Like an Onion:

  • Base layer (merino wool or thermal long-sleeve top)
  • Mid layer (fleece or insulated hoodie)
  • Outer layer (waterproof jacket with a hood)

2. Add These Cold-Weather Must-Haves:

  • Thermal socks (and a spare pair in the bag!)
  • Waterproof boots with warm lining
  • Gaters
  • Gloves or mittens (and a backup pair – they will get lost)
  • Woolly hat or fleece-lined cap

💡 Bonus tip: Use hand warmers or bring warm drinks to boost morale on longer cold walks.

We love our Mac-in-a-Sac’s. Not only are they super portable and breathable, but they come in funky colours to ensure no one gets lost on a colder, dreary day!

Final Thoughts: Keep It Practical, Keep It Fun

You don’t need to rush out and buy a full mini-mountaineer kit – start with the basics, and build up specialist gear as your family starts walking more often or further afield.

The key? Layers, comfort, and weather-readiness. If your children are warm, dry and comfy, they’ll associate hiking with fun – and that’s what it’s all about!

  1. Always found it tricky with my two. My eldest was a heater, and peeled clothes off, prefers to walk in the colder weather with two layers on at most. My youngest was always a freezer, and we had 5 layers on him in October and he’s still cold. I used to layers them equally and let one pass clothes to the other!!

    1. My two are similar. My youngest would wear shorts and tees year round if it was up to him, but my eldest will often be wearing a hoodie, hood up, on a warm day (claiming he’s ‘just right’). Your tactic must’ve worked a treat tho, no excess layers to carry, just pass them on to someone else to wear 😂
