Family Walks at Delamere Forest (Part 2): Gruffalo Trail & Green Route Adventure

Friday 8th August 2025 (Part 2). After our wander around the Red Walk and a well-earned ice cream, we debated whether to squeeze in another stroll before heading home. Our annual Forestry England pass meant we were getting great value from the day already — and we weren’t quite ready to call it quits. You can catch up on Part 1 of our Delamere adventure here.

Off we marched for another wander through Delamere Forest.

It was getting on a bit by this point, and being a Friday, we didn’t fancy being caught in the usual end-of-week traffic. So we decided to keep it short and sweet and go with the Green Route (2.1 miles) — this time taking us around the other side of the moss we’d glimpsed earlier.

Back Into the Woods
Once again, we found ourselves ambling past more Gruffalo characters (always a hit) and over the first railway bridge. Still no trains at that point — typical.

As we climbed one of the gentle inclines, we spotted a little side path that looked like it led straight out to the moss. Naturally, we couldn’t resist a detour! And what a fab little side adventure it turned out to be — it’s always nice to get a proper look at these unique landscapes up close.

It wasn’t long before we looped back round to familiar ground: the ice cream van, the Gruffalo, and this time — a photo with the snake! 🐍 We didn’t walk the Gruffalo trail so we didn’t see all the characters, but we still tried to snap photos when we did come across them!

Chasing Trains & Final Thoughts
As we reached the final stretch, the boys realised the train tracks run almost parallel to the visitor centre. Cue much excitement and hedge-peering as they sprinted ahead in the hope of catching a train. And this time — success! It’s the little things, isn’t it?

And just like that, it was time to head home — two lovely forest walks in the bag and plenty of memories made.

Delamere Forest really stood out thanks to the mossy landscape. Sometimes forest walks can blur into one, but this one had its own unique charm.

Would We Come Back?
Yes… maybe.
We had a great day, and both walks were quiet in places — but these Forestry England sites can get very busy, and we do tend to prefer quieter spots off the beaten track. I’m still curious about the White Walk, and if we were in the area again, I’d love to give it a go, especially as I suspect it would be a pretty quiet walk.

Ranging from 1.9 – 6.5 miles, there are walks here for everyone.

And The Blue MTB trail?
Hmm. Jury’s still out. The website isn’t very forthcoming — just a vague mention and a suggestion to buy a map at the visitor centre. For planning a bike trip, I’d have appreciated a little more transparency online – just because it’s not a 5 minute job to load bikes and it’s a long way to come for just a couple of sections. We saw a few signs pointing to some blue sections but I’m unsure if it offers a set route or whether you have to just cycle around until you find them 😅.

We saw a few riders out and about — some looking very experienced, some clearly children — but not in a spot where I could corner them for their thoughts 😂. We also spotted a skills park… right as we were leaving. D’oh! I couldn’t tell how big it was, but it’s something we might check out next time.

  1. I love your walks with your beautiful family, EJ. The forest is scenic. And the snake got me watch close to the photo. Thank God it’s just a character.🤭

    Enjoy your Sunday.
