Ford Transit Custom Campervan Build – Part 13: Our First Taste of Power (Thanks to a Generous Friend!)

A Little (Temporary) Van Update

August 2025. I’ve mentioned before that we’re lucky enough to have not one, but two “van enabler” friends in our lives. The most enthusiastic of the pair – let’s call him AS – has been a huge source of encouragement whenever we’ve hit snags with the van build. He’s also been the mastermind behind a few of our best family MTB days out, including two cracking van-life rides with him and his youngest at Cannock Chase and Llandegla.

Over the August Bank Holiday, AS dropped off his son’s old mountain bike for our youngest as he was ready to sell and our youngest was ready for something bigger – and, as if dropping it off wasn’t kind enough, he turned up with a gift! A battery pack for the van! He knew we were out of budget for electrics for a while, but he had an old power pack sitting unused and thought it might give us a head start.

He wasn’t wrong!

Let there be light! Wiring the lights and plumbing into our little battery pack!

Between the three of us (AS, my husband, and me), we managed to get the rear lighting wired up – including the dimmable kitchen light that was included with our USR Design kitchen. The bonus? With the new battery pack, we could finally plumb in the sink too!

By the end of that Saturday, we had rear interior lighting and a working tap. Sure, it’s only a temporary fix until we get a proper battery and solar panel fitted, but for now it means we’ve got power, water, and a few more adventures within reach!

I’m honestly so grateful – and a bit blown away – by the thoughtfulness. What a lovely, practical gift, and such a brilliant way to help us keep the van dreams rolling. 🚐

Yay, water! It’s the little things! Working plumbing was a bonus on our last Peaks walking day!
