Beach vs Mountains: The Best Free and Budget-Friendly Activities for Families All Year Round

Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

Beach or Mountains? Why I’ll Never Choose Just One

Ask me whether I prefer the beach or the mountains and I instantly freeze… because honestly? I can’t pick. It’s like choosing a favourite child – impossible, mildly offensive, and entirely unnecessary 😅. Both offer something magical, something free, and something families desperately need: space to breathe, explore, and reconnect.

Over the years, with two energetic boys in tow, I’ve learned that beach days aren’t just for summer and mountain days aren’t just for winter. Flip the script and you’ll find some of your best memories in the “off” season – the empty beaches, the peaceful hills, the low-sun days that somehow make everyone a little calmer (and cost absolutely nothing). Of course, being nestled in the Midlands of the UK it’s not like we have an abundance of either mountains or beaches – which is probably why I love them both equally. And to be honest, adventures away from the crowds are the ones I like best of all – bring on the ‘off-season’!

Here’s why I’ll never choose between the two – and why you don’t have to either.

Why Beaches Are Brilliant (All Year Round)

Beaches are nature’s playgrounds. Even in winter, they feel like one huge invitation to explore.

What beaches give children (and stressed parents):

  • Endless space to run without anyone judging the noise level
  • Free sensory play – sand, shells, waves, driftwood, sea glass
  • Nature on display: seabirds, rock pools, washed-up treasures
  • A built-in calming soundtrack that magically reduces sibling arguments (it really does!)

Budget-friendly beach ideas:

Summer

  • Pack a picnic and avoid buying anything on-site.
  • Create a “beach scavenger hunt” (smooth pebble, feather, 3 types of seaweed…).
  • Build sand structures beyond castles: tunnels, racetracks, obstacle courses, and our personal favourite – the biggest hole!
  • If you have them, bring bodyboards, arm bands or cheap inflatables for some ocean time. But don’t underestimate the fun you can have just by paddling!
  • Nature sketching or shell-sorting for quiet moments.
I’m sure this was the foundation of a Fort wall! Imagination knows no bounds at the beach!

Winter

  • Rock pooling with a cheap £1 bucket – the creatures are often more active.
  • Driftwood collecting for crafts at home.
  • Take a flask of hot chocolate and do a seaside “winter wildlife watch”.
  • Draw shapes in the sand with sticks and play giant noughts & crosses.
  • Walk the same beach you visit in summer and spot the differences – tides, colours, plants, smells, wildlife.
Winter beaches are not to be missed! What child DOESN’T love splashing in the waves and water?!

Why Mountains (or any Hills) Are Just as Wonderful

You don’t have to scale Snowdon to enjoy a mountain day. Any local hill, woodland trail, or ridgeline counts – and children honestly don’t care what it’s called. Ours regularly refer to big hills as mountains – a ‘let it go’ moment (she says as she quietly checks her “hills” app and discovers it is actually a Munro or something 😅)

One of my favourite Wrekin images (no, it’s not a mountain!) was the cheers as we reached the summit!

What mountains offer families:

  • Natural confidence-building (“Look how high we climbed!”)
  • Free exercise disguised as adventure
  • A real sense of quiet and escape (unless you pick a social media favourite, like Mam Tor or The Wrekin haha!)
  • Wildlife spotting – birds of prey, deer, rabbits, insects

Budget-friendly mountain ideas:

Summer

  • Take a simple route and let children lead with a map – brilliant for learning.
  • Make a nature bracelet using tape around their wrist to stick leaves/flowers.
  • Stop at a viewpoint or Trig point for a family selfie series – same place every year.
  • Bring binoculars and turn it into a “mountain safari”.
Family of four stand by a trig point on top of a hill, with more hills and far reaching views behind them.
A family pic with a Trig Point – had to be done! A very VERY lucky quiet trip to Mam Tor!

Winter

  • Wrap up warm and go “puddle hopping” on forest tracks.
  • Pack a warm lunch (wrapped in foil to keep it hot) and eat it outdoors.
  • Look for animal tracks in mud or snow – fox, deer, badger.
  • Do a short loop walk and end with a treat in the car (biscuits count as treats).
Mountains (and hills!) hold all sorts of surprises on the climb up – what will you find?

Why It’s Never Beach vs Mountain – It’s Both

I love both for different reasons, and our boys do too. The beach gives us freedom, creativity and calm; the mountains give us challenge, confidence and curiosity. They balance each other.

But the real secret? Both are free, both are accessible, and both work in every season — once you stop waiting for “perfect weather” (Yes, that was once us!).
Some of our best days have been:

It’s never the location that makes it memorable — it’s the way your family fills the day.

Quick Tips for Making Either Day Easy (and Cheap)

  • Always bring snacks. Children walk 30% further with snacks. Scientific fact.*
  • Pack layers. Weather changes faster than mood swings.
  • Give children a “job”. Map reader, pebble collector, wildlife spotter, photographer.
  • Keep expectations low. The best days are usually the unplanned ones.
  • Take the pressure off. It’s not about mileage – it’s about moments.

*Not scientifically proven, but every parent knows it’s true. 😜

Final Thoughts

Beach or mountains? I’ll happily choose both, every single time. They’re affordable, they’re grounding, they’re fun, and they turn ordinary days into “remember that time when…” stories.

If you’re stuck choosing where to go this weekend, don’t be – pick whichever is closer, cheaper, or easiest – or flip a coin. Either way, you’ll end up outside, together, discovering something new. And that, really, is the whole point.

  1. We used to focus mainly on beaches when the kids were younger and had many happy holidays sitting on a beach (with a little surf kayak play for yours truly). Tidepooling was my specialty and the kids used to follow me around for hours. I still love it to be honest. My daughter never enjoyed hiking so mountains were a thing for us and our eldest

  2. I smiled when you said that you like places when few people around. My mind: that’s me.🤭 The trick is to go to the beach in the winter season and vice versa for the mountain, too. Great advice, EJ.
